MEAL Planning in Practice (2026)
Fri, 23 Jan 2026 16:22:23 +0000
MEAL Planning in Practice (2026)
Practical MEAL systems for small NGOs without dedicated M&E staffSelf-Study Certificate Course
Start: Immediate Access
Time: Typically around 3 hours to complete
You've been handed MEAL responsibilities but no one showed you how to actually do it. You know you need to track progress and prove impact, but the frameworks feel complicated and the jargon doesn't help. Most MEAL training assumes you have a dedicated M&E team and months to design systems. For smaller NGOs, that's not reality. Without a workable MEAL system, organizations face:
- Donors asking for evidence of impact you can't provide
- Data collection that buries your team without informing decisions
- No clear way to know if you're reaching the most vulnerable
- Missed opportunities to adapt when something isn't working
- End-of-project reports scrambled together from incomplete records
This practical training gives you a simple, working MEAL system you can build this week. You'll follow a program officer's journey as she builds her MEAL plan from scratch, facing the same questions you do: Are we reaching the most vulnerable? Are we creating real change? How do I prove impact to the donor? No complex frameworks designed for large agencies. Just what works when resources are limited and you need something functional. Through this training, you'll be able to:
- Build a MEAL Framework Table for any project using a 9-column planning structure
- Design indicators that measure both reach and quality
- Set realistic targets based on context, not wishful thinking
- Run monthly learning meetings that turn data into decisions
- Explain your MEAL system to donors with confidence
This self-paced course combines video lessons with practical tools you can use immediately:
- Video presentations following a realistic case study
- The MEAL Framework Table — a 9-column planning tool covering what to measure, how to calculate it, where data comes from, who collects it, and who gets informed
- The Monthly Learning Meeting template — a 4-part agenda that turns data into decisions
- The MEAL Plan Quality Checklist — a review tool to check your plan before you finalize it
- Knowledge check to test your understanding
- Certificate upon completion

Advanced Market Systems Development Training
Tue, 20 Jan 2026 06:21:22 +0000
Why take this course?
Our Advanced Training on Market Systems Development course is designed specifically for professionals with experience, enthusiasm, and passion for the practical challenges of MSD implementation.
This course will be run in-person. It is suitable for people who have taken other introductory MSD courses, including our own online market systems development course.
Developing a course for seasoned practitioners allows us to take a radically different approach to training. The course will be immersive and scenario-based, asking you to develop business models, negotiate with partners, and respond to unexpected events.
You will also learn about some of the most pressing challenges in market systems development today, including environmental impacts, working in conflict-affected contexts, and supporting equity.
We are offering this course, and we believe that it fills a critically needed gap in training provision among the MSD community. To make it work, however, we need your help. If you are interested in joining, please register as soon as you can – this will help build the critical mass needed to run the course.
During this course, you will:
- Build practical skills in market systems development, through immersive scenario-based training
- Learn from experts about the latest thinking in MSD, and how to apply it in your programmes
- Meet a network of senior professionals from around the world, who share your passion for MSD
- For a full description of the course content, click here.
The course will be run in-person in Istanbul, and will be full-time over the five training days. For the full course content, click here. The course consists of four components:
- Scenario training: Our course will immerse you in an MSD scenario, meeting and negotiating with market actors and donors to solve real-world challenges.
- Experience sharing: Course participants bring decades of experience in market systems development. Learn from them and come prepared to share your expertise.
- Expert presentations: Our course will feature training sessions from experts in their fields, on topics ranging from gender, to green growth, to financial services.
- Case studies: By studying experiences from other market systems development programmes, participants will learn about successful implementation.
To apply for the Advanced MSD Training, please complete the application form available here. Please note that the application does not guarantee your place, so please do not make any logistical arrangements before hearing from us. We will respond to confirm your place within two weeks of application.
As this is an advanced course, we are seeking participants with at least three years of experience in MSD implementation, ideally with some introductory training in MSD. However, we understand that everyone’s experience is different, so please apply even if your experience doesn’t exactly meet these criteria.
